A homeowner in Port Royal called us last spring. Her 12-year-old Sub-Zero PRO 48 had stopped cooling. The appliance showroom on Pine Ridge had already quoted her a replacement: $14,200 for the new unit, plus delivery, plus installation, plus new custom panel fronts because the cabinetry dimensions had drifted slightly on the new model. All-in, she was looking at $18,500 and a 10-week wait.
The actual repair was a $190 condenser fan motor. With labor, $410. The fridge has been running ever since.
This story isn't unusual. It's almost every premium appliance call we take in Naples. Here's why repair almost always wins on luxury appliances — and the few situations where it doesn't.
The Real Replacement Cost in a Naples Luxury Kitchen
The sticker price isn't the price. Replacing a built-in luxury appliance in Pelican Bay, Mediterra, or Quail West involves five line items:
- The unit itself: Sub-Zero PRO 48 — $14,000. Wolf 48" dual-fuel range — $13,000. Thermador Freedom column refrigerator + freezer pair — $18,000 to $22,000. Miele G7000-series dishwasher — $2,500. Gaggenau 200-series — $4,500 and up.
- Delivery and rigging: $400 to $1,200 for a built-in column. More if there's a stair turn.
- Installation: $600 to $1,800. More if it's gas, more if it's water, more for built-in trim.
- Custom panel fronts: $1,200 to $4,000+ for a panel-ready column on top of the appliance cost. Naples custom millwork shops are booked out 6-12 weeks.
- Cabinetry rework: New units rarely fit the old opening within 1/4 inch. Even a 1/2" cutout change means scribed trim, filler panels, and a millwork visit.
- Wait time: 6 to 14 weeks for delivery on most premium brands. Longer if it's a special order panel or finish.
The "$14,000 fridge" is actually a $19,000 project that ties up your kitchen for two months. The "$400 repair" runs the rest of the day.
Sub-Zero: Designed to Be Repaired
Sub-Zero builds appliances to last 20 years and beyond. Every Sub-Zero we service in Naples — even units from the late 1990s — still has parts available. The sealed system carries a 12-year warranty from the factory. The compressors are over-engineered for the duty cycle.
A Sub-Zero in your kitchen is not a disposable appliance. It's the appliance equivalent of a range Rover Defender: expensive to buy, simple in concept, designed so that every component is serviceable. Common repairs:

Wolf, Thermador, Viking, BlueStar: The Pro Range Philosophy
Professional ranges are built around the idea that every wear part is replaceable without replacing the range. The chassis lasts 30+ years. The burners, igniters, knobs, control boards, and oven elements are designed to be swapped.
Real repair costs on a Wolf 48" dual-fuel range:
- Surface igniter (single burner): $150-$250 installed
- Spark module (controls all burners): $300-$500 installed
- Oven igniter: $220-$340
- Convection fan motor: $380-$550
- Control board: $400-$800
- Glass touch panel: $600-$1,100
Compare to a new Wolf 48" replacement at $13,000 plus install. There's almost no failure on a pro range — short of structural cabinet damage or a catastrophic gas valve failure — where repair isn't the right answer.
Thermador and Viking are the same philosophy. BlueStar goes even further — their ranges are largely mechanical, with fewer electronic boards to fail, and parts are stocked back to the 2000s. Bertazzoni, ILVE, and La Cornue are smaller-volume European builds where finding a tech who's worked on them is the bigger challenge than parts availability — we've trained on all three.
Miele: Engineered for 20 Years of Use
Miele famously tests its appliances to a 20-year design life at average household use. The dishwashers are spec'd for 6,000-7,500 cycles. The washers and dryers are spec'd for 10,000+ hours of run time.
Common Miele dishwasher repairs:
- Door gasket: $75-$140
- Circulation pump: $380-$580
- Drain pump: $220-$340
- Control board: $400-$700
- Motor brushes (washers): $250-$380
Replacing a Miele dishwasher at $2,500 because the drain pump failed at year 9 is bad math. The pump is $250, your dishwasher has another 8-10 years in it, and you'd be throwing away a German-engineered appliance over a $40 part.

Gaggenau and Liebherr: European Built-Ins
Gaggenau and Liebherr are less common in Naples but worth mentioning. Both are designed to be repaired indefinitely. Liebherr in particular has been quietly taking market share in Talis Park and Grey Oaks new builds because of its monolithic design and 7-year sealed system warranty. Parts availability is excellent.
Dacor sits in a slightly different bracket — its newer Modernist Collection units are essentially Samsung internals in a high-end shell. Repair vs. replace economics still favor repair, but the underlying parts are easier to source.
When Replacement Is Actually the Right Call
We tell customers the truth, and sometimes the truth is replace. Five situations where it makes sense:
1. Sealed system failure at 18+ years. When a Sub-Zero sealed system goes — meaning refrigerant lines, evaporator, or condenser — the repair runs $1,800 to $3,500 and the rest of the unit is also aging. If everything else is original, replacement is rational.
2. You're remodeling the cabinetry anyway. If you're tearing the kitchen apart to redo the cabinetry, that's the right moment to upgrade. The cabinetry integration cost goes away.

4. Parts shortage on a discontinued model. Rare, but real on some 2000s-era Viking and Dacor units where specific control boards are no longer manufactured.
5. The repair quote is over 50% of replacement AND the appliance is past its design midpoint. A $7,000 repair on a 12-year-old appliance with an 18-year design life is the gray zone where it depends on the rest of the unit's condition.

Why Naples-Specific Math Tilts Even Further Toward Repair
Four Naples-specific factors:
- Built-in cabinetry integration cost. Custom panels in Port Royal, Pelican Bay, and Mediterra kitchens run $2,000-$4,000+ per appliance to remake. Replacement adds this every time.
- Lead times during season. Premium appliance delivery to Naples is slower November through April when demand is high. A repair done today beats a replacement delivered in February.
- Salt air and humidity. A new appliance in Naples doesn't get the same lifespan it gets in Denver. Replacing a 10-year-old unit with a new one in the same coastal environment doesn't reset the clock — it just starts a new one ticking under the same conditions.
- Snowbird timing. If your luxury appliance fails in October before you arrive, repair gets you running the same week. Replacement may not arrive before you fly home in April.
