When You Need Repair

When You Need Garbage Disposal Repair in Southwest Florida

Garbage disposals are simple appliances that mostly work — until they don't. When they fail, the failure pattern is almost always one of three things, and most repairs are quick same-visit jobs.

Jam — disposal hums but doesn't spin

The most common call. Something solid — a small bone, fruit pit, or piece of silverware — has stopped the impeller plate. The motor hums because it's trying to turn but can't. The fix is to clear the jam from below using the hex wrench port, then reset the breaker on the underside of the unit. If the disposal still won't spin after that, the start capacitor or the motor itself is the next likely culprit. InSinkErator Badger and Evolution series are the most common units we see jammed in Naples kitchens.

Leak — water under the sink

Leaks come from one of three places, and each means a different repair. Top of the disposal (the sink flange / mounting ring) is a reseal job. Side of the body (the dishwasher inlet hose) is a hose clamp or fitting replacement. Bottom of the body (the motor housing) means the internal seals have failed — that's a replace, not a repair, because the disposal isn't designed to be opened up. We diagnose by which side of the unit is wet.

Repeated reset button trips, or dead unit

A reset button that pops every use means the motor is drawing too much current — usually from a worn bearing or a partially seized impeller. A completely dead disposal with no hum, no light, and a tripped reset button that won't stay in often means the motor windings have shorted. Both point to replacement on most consumer units; on premium InSinkErator Evolution Excel or Waste King Legend 8000, replacement of just the motor module is sometimes viable.

Why Things Fail Here

Why Disposals Fail in Southwest Florida

Disposals are robust, but a couple of Naples-specific factors drive the calls we get.

Heavy entertaining season abuse

Naples and Marco Island kitchens run heavy through the season — dinner parties, holiday cooking, prep volume that consumer-grade disposals weren't designed for. Bones, fibrous vegetables, and the occasional piece of cutlery account for almost every jam call we run between November and April.

Hard water scale buildup

Inside the grinding chamber, Cape Coral and inland well-water scale slowly accumulates on the chamber walls and impeller — reducing efficiency and increasing motor load over years. This is a contributor to motor failures we see at year 8–10 on disposals that haven't been periodically flushed.

Vacation-home non-use creates smell and corrosion

A disposal that sits for six months in a snowbird home develops smell from biofilm, and the seals dry out. The first day back, leaks and odors are common. We service seasonal Naples and Lely homes pre-arrival to head it off.

Options & Methods

Garbage Disposal Repair Options & Methods

Garbage disposals are workhorse appliances that run unnoticed until they jam, leak, or stop spinning. Naples luxury homes specify premium 3/4 HP and 1 HP InSinkErator Pro and Evolution models; Cape Coral and Fort Myers rental properties run high-volume Moen, Waste King, and basic InSinkErator Badger lineups. Each disposal class has its own service rhythm and failure pattern. Here are the disposal categories we cover.

Premium 1 HP and 3/4 HP Continuous Feed (InSinkErator Pro/Evolution)

Premium continuous-feed disposals in Naples luxury kitchens — Port Royal, Aqualane Shores, Mediterra, Quail West — typically run InSinkErator Pro or Evolution in the 1 HP class. Stainless grinding components, MultiGrind technology, and SoundSeal insulation are the premium features. Service items include jam clearing, splash-guard replacement, mounting flange leaks, and motor wear past year 10.

Mid-Tier 1/2 HP Continuous Feed (Mainstream Builder Packages)

Mid-tier 1/2 HP continuous-feed disposals in Bonita Springs, Estero, and Fort Myers family kitchens — typically InSinkErator Badger, Moen mid-line, or Waste King mid-tier models. Reliable cost-effective service with standard grinding components. Jam clearing, splash-guard replacement, and motor service are the routine items.

Batch Feed Models

Batch-feed disposals — activated by a stopper-switch rather than a wall switch — show up in older Naples and Marco Island kitchens, and in homes where the homeowner wanted the safety-by-design of a magnetic stopper. Service items include the magnetic switch assembly, jam clearing, and motor service.

Commercial-Grade and Heavy-Use Residential

Commercial-grade disposals in Naples country club kitchens, hotel back-of-house, and luxury residential applications with heavy daily use. Three-phase electrical service, larger grinding chambers, and reinforced mounting are the differentiators. Service includes motor work, jam clearing on harder food waste loads, and electrical-circuit diagnostic.

Whichever disposal class sits under your sink, we arrive with the right diagnostic tools, jam-clearing equipment, and replacement parts. Call (239) 544-4666.

Repair Or Replace

Repair or Replace? How to Decide

Disposal math leans heavily toward replacement on most motor failures — the units are reasonably priced new and the labor on a swap is straightforward. We tell you when to repair and when to replace.

Premium (InSinkErator Evolution Excel / Evolution PRO, Waste King Legend 8000)

These higher-grade disposals are worth servicing for jams, flange leaks, and reset issues through year 10+. Motor module replacement is sometimes viable on these models, though full unit replacement is often the better call once the motor has failed.

Upper-mid (InSinkErator Evolution series, KitchenAid, Moen GX/GXS, Waste King L-8000)

Jam clearing, capacitor replacement, flange reseal — all routine same-visit repairs through year 8. Motor failure past year 5 typically means replace.

Mid-tier (InSinkErator Badger 5 / Badger Pro 5, Waste King L-2600 / L-3200, Moen GT, GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Kenmore, American Standard)

Badger 5 is the most-installed disposal in Naples kitchens — we see them daily. Jams and reset issues are quick fixes at any age. Motor failures on these economy units almost always mean replace, not repair. A new Badger 5 plus install labor is usually less than rebuilding a tired one.

Age Cutoffs We Apply
  • Premium (InSinkErator Evolution Excel, Waste King Legend): jam/leak repair through year 10+; motor module case-by-case
  • Upper-mid: repairs through year 8; motor past year 5 = replace
  • Mid-tier (Badger 5, Waste King L-series): jam/leak any age; motor failure = replace

When we tell you to replace — often, especially on Badger 5 and similar economy units past year 5 with motor failure. The labor and parts cost on a motor rebuild approaches the cost of a new unit installed.

Why Choose AllFix

Why Southwest Florida Chooses AllFix for Garbage Disposal Repair

Garbage disposals are deceptively complex appliances. The grinding chamber houses a heavy stainless flywheel running at high RPM, electrical connections that face constant moisture exposure, and a motor that must work under variable food-waste loads. Improper jam clearing damages the splash guard and the mounting flange — the most common cause of leak calls. After two decades on the bench across Naples, we know the disposal failure patterns cold. We service every one of the 11 communities we cover.

Year founded as Naples' factory-trained appliance service. Google rating with hundreds of reviews. EPA-certified, licensed, insured. 90-day warranty on parts and labor. Same-day response on most calls before noon. Call (239) 544-4666.

Frequently Asked

Garbage Disposal Repair FAQ

Questions we field most often on garbage disposal repair — pulled directly from the calls we take across Naples, Marco Island, and the rest of Southwest Florida.

How much does garbage disposal repair cost?

The $69 diagnostic visit gives a written estimate. Common single-visit repairs — jam clearing, splash-guard replacement, mounting-flange resealing, and reset-switch service — fall in a predictable range. Motor replacement on premium disposals costs more but is usually worth it past year 5. Mid-tier disposals past year 8 with motor failure are usually replacement candidates.

My disposal hums but won't spin — what's wrong?

Almost always a jammed flywheel — debris caught between the impellers. We carry the proper wrench and clearing tools on the truck. The fix is usually under 15 minutes for a clean jam. If the motor itself has burned out, the diagnostic visit identifies that — humming with no shaft movement after clearing indicates a seized motor.

My disposal is leaking — fix?

Three common leak sources: mounting flange under the sink (worn plumber's putty or compromised gasket), splash guard (cracked from improper jam clearing), or the discharge connection at the drain. The diagnostic visit identifies which in 5-10 minutes. All three are typically same-visit repairs.

How long should a garbage disposal last?

Premium continuous-feed disposals (InSinkErator Pro, Evolution; commercial-grade) routinely run 10-15 years with regular service. Mid-tier 1/2 HP disposals typically 6-10 years. Heavy daily use in family kitchens and rentals compresses both timelines. Naples and Cape Coral hard water has minimal impact on disposal longevity — the main factors are use volume and food-waste type.

What can I run through my garbage disposal?

Most cooked food waste is fine. Avoid fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks), grease and oil, large bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds in volume, and starchy foods like potato peels that turn into paste. Premium disposals handle a wider range of food types than mid-tier units, but the safe-list for any disposal is shorter than most homeowners assume.

Do you offer same-day disposal service?

Same-day or next-day for most of our coverage area. Naples, Marco Island, Pelican Bay, and Bonita Springs are typically same-day if you call before noon. Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Estero, and Lely depend on the day's routing. The $69 service call applies toward the repair.
