Appliances don't fail suddenly. They warn you. Usually for weeks. The problem is most homeowners can't translate the sounds — so the warning gets ignored, and the $180 fix becomes a $900 fix.
After a few thousand service calls across Naples, Marco Island, and Bonita Springs, we can usually tell what's wrong with an appliance from the driveway. Here's the translation guide we wish every customer had taped inside the laundry room.
Refrigerator Sounds
A modern refrigerator is supposed to make noise. The question is whether the noise is normal or new.
Steady, low hum — NORMAL
That's your compressor running. On variable-speed inverter compressors (most LG, Samsung, and newer Sub-Zero units), the hum changes pitch as the compressor ramps up and down. That's not a malfunction.
A new high-pitched whine — EVAPORATOR FAN MOTOR FAILING
The evaporator fan lives behind the rear panel inside the freezer. When its bearings start to dry out — common in humid Florida environments — it develops a thin, sewing-machine whine that gets louder when the freezer door is open. Cost to fix: $220-$340. Urgency: schedule within a month. If it seizes, your fridge stops cooling within hours.
Loud clicking every 3-5 seconds, no cooling — COMPRESSOR START RELAY FAILING
The relay tries to start the compressor, fails, kicks the overload, and tries again. Click. Pause. Click. Pause. Cost to fix: $180-$280 if it's just the relay. Call now — the failed relay is sending surge current into the compressor windings every cycle.
Gurgling, popping, occasional sigh — NORMAL
Refrigerant moving through the evaporator. Plastic liner expanding and contracting. The defrost cycle ending. None of this is a problem.
Buzzing that won't stop — ICE MAKER WATER VALVE STUCK OPEN
Usually accompanied by ice cubes that taste like nothing or a leak under the fridge. Cost to fix: $190-$260. Schedule within two weeks before it floods the floor.
Brand-specific signatures
- LG compressors in 2014-2019 models have a distinctive triple-click pattern when the linear compressor fails. This is the well-documented failure mode. Don't ignore it.
- Samsung French door ice makers often produce a deep buzz from the auger motor when ice gets jammed — usually fixable without parts.
- Liebherr evaporator fans sound different (quieter, brushless) — any new whine is a sealed-bearing failure.
- Sub-Zero dual-compressor units: if one section is silent and the other is loud, you've lost a compressor. That's a major repair — see our 7 reasons a Sub-Zero isn't cooling guide.
Washing Machine Sounds
Washers tell you the most because they move so much weight at speed.
Banging during spin — UNBALANCED LOAD OR WORN SUSPENSION
First try: rebalance the load. If it bangs even with a balanced load, the suspension rods (top loaders) or shock absorbers (front loaders) are worn out. Cost to fix: $260-$420. Call now — a tub that breaks free can destroy the cabinet.
Grinding during agitation or spin — DRIVE BELT OR TUB BEARINGS
Belt grinding is cheap ($150-$220). Bearings are not. On a front-load washer, replacing tub bearings often runs $500-$700 and may not be worth it on a 7+ year old machine.
Squealing — WORN BELT
Classic dry-belt squeal, usually at the start of agitation or spin. Cost to fix: $150-$240. Schedule within a month.
Humming with no spin — MOTOR OR LID/DOOR SWITCH
The motor is energized but something is preventing the cycle. Often the lid switch on top loaders or the door interlock on front loaders. Cost to fix: $140-$260 for the switch, $450+ for the motor.
Dryer Sounds
Dryers are simple machines that make four classic noises.
Rhythmic thumping — DRUM SUPPORT ROLLERS OR REAR DRUM BEARING
Once per drum rotation, a soft thump. Cost to fix: $220-$340. Schedule within a month. If you let it run to failure, the drum tilts and rubs the cabinet.
Loud squealing — IDLER PULLEY OR BLOWER WHEEL
Idler pulley failure is the #1 dryer noise complaint we get in Naples. Cost to fix: $180-$280.
Humming, no tumble — BROKEN DRIVE BELT
Motor runs, drum sits still. Cost to fix: $190-$290.
Rattling that comes and goes — COIN OR HAIRPIN IN THE BLOWER WHEEL
Usually fixable in 20 minutes. If you ignore it, the foreign object eventually chips the blower wheel — and that's a $250 part.
If your dryer is also taking forever to dry, the sound might be masking a vent problem — our dryer takes forever Naples vent guide covers what to check.
Dishwasher Sounds
Dishwashers have gotten quieter, which means any new sound is significant.
Humming louder than usual during wash — CIRCULATION PUMP BEARINGS
Most common on dishwashers 6+ years old. Cost to fix: $320-$520. On a Bosch or Miele, the pump replacement is more complex and runs higher.
Grinding during wash — CHOPPER BLADE DULL OR BROKEN
The chopper grinds up food particles before the drain pump pushes them out. When it dulls, it sounds like a small blender choking. Cost to fix: $180-$280.
Gurgling during drain — NORMAL
Air moving through the drain line. Not a problem.
Loud sloshing or banging — SPRAY ARM HITTING A TALL DISH
Not a failure — rearrange the load. If it persists with no tall items, the upper rack adjuster may have slipped.
Bosch and Asko are nearly silent — so any new sound counts
If your Bosch 800 series suddenly makes any audible motor noise during a wash, that's a real signal. Bosch dishwashers are engineered to run at 39-44 dB. New noise = scheduled service call.
Range and Oven Sounds
Continuous clicking — OVEN OR SURFACE BURNER IGNITER
Gas surface burner that clicks and clicks but won't light: moisture in the igniter or a worn spark module. Cost to fix: $150-$320.
Popping during preheat — NORMAL
Metal expanding as the oven cavity comes up to temperature. Especially loud on Wolf, Thermador, and Viking ranges because of the heavy-gauge stainless steel.
Loud whoosh on gas ignition — usually NORMAL
Gas burners light with a small flame ball. If the whoosh is dramatic and delayed (3+ seconds), the spark electrode is dirty or out of position. Cost to fix: $120-$220.
Garbage Disposal Sounds
Humming, no spin — JAMMED, OFTEN A BONE OR PIT
Reset the unit, use the hex key on the bottom to free the impellers. Free if you DIY, $140-$200 if we come out.
Loud rattling — LOOSE IMPELLER OR FOREIGN OBJECT
Usually a piece of glass, a bottle cap, or a wedding ring. Don't run the disposal to clear it — open it up.
When to Call vs. When to Wait
A quick matrix:
- Normal sounds (gurgling, popping, hum, gentle clicks): ignore.
- New sound, appliance still working: schedule within 2-4 weeks.
- Loud sound + reduced performance (warm fridge, wet clothes, dirty dishes): schedule within 48-72 hours.
- Grinding, screeching, smoke, burning smell: unplug and call now.
The gap between "new noise" and "complete failure" is usually 2 to 6 weeks. Acting in week one costs a few hundred dollars. Acting after the failure often costs $800-$1,500 because you've now lost food, taken on water damage, or had to replace a secondary part that was destroyed by the primary failure.
If the noise comes with rising energy bills, the appliance is also running longer to compensate — our guide on why your energy bill is higher than expected goes deeper on that signal.
When a Sound Means "Time to Replace"
If the noise points to a sealed-system refrigerant leak, a cracked outer tub on a 9-year-old washer, or a compressor on a 12-year-old standard fridge, replacement may make more sense than repair. We walk through the math in our repair-or-replace decision guide.
